Superconducting meissner effect bearings for cryogenic turbomachines. Interim report, 1 November 1989-31 December 1990

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:6047504

This report describes the first year efforts to develop a miniature, high speed superconducting bearing system suitable for cryogenic turbomachines such as miniature turboexpanders used in spaceborne cryocoolers for surveillance sensors. A bearing breadboard was designed, fabricated, and tested to a rotational speed of 450,000 rpm. Numerical models were developed to predict levitation focus between superconductors and permanent magnets, and validated with experimental data. The design of the turbomachine was initiated, including the conceptualization of a novel bearing system.
