Spectra and protolytic properties of aqueous perxnic acid in the pH range -0.2 to 13 were studied by conventional and stopped-flow spectrophotometry. The following pK values and limits were found (25.0/degrees/C): pK/sub H//sub 4/XeO/sub 6/ < 0, pK/sub H//sub 3/XeO/sub 6//sup /minus// = 4.29 /plus minus/ 0.03; pK/sub H//sub 2/XeO/sub 6//sup 2/minus// = 10.81 /plus minus/ 0.04. The enthalpy of dissociation 25.0/degrees/C of H/sub 3/XeO/sub 6//sup /minus// is 0 /plus minus/ 5 kJ mol/sup /minus/1/; that of H/sub 2/XeO/sub 6//sup 2/minus// is 3 /plus minus/ 2 kJ mol/sup /minus/1/. 12 references, 4 figures, 1 table.
