The reactions of the Mo[double bond]S unit in the [(Cp)Mo(O)([mu]-S)[sub 2]Mo(O)(S)][sup [minus]] complex with SO[sub 2] at various temperatures give various products of the type [(Cp)Mo(O)([mu]-S)[sub 2]Mo(O)(L)][sup [minus]] (L = SO[sub 3][sup 2[minus]], S[sub 2]O[sub 3][sup 2[minus]], and SO[sub 4][sup 2[minus]]). A [sup 1]H-NMR study of these reactions indicates that the final products isolated and structurally characterized are derivatives of the unstable [(Cp)Mo(O)([mu]-S)[sub 2]Mo(O)(S[sub 2]O[sub 2])][sup [minus]] complex that forms initially by SO[sub 2] addition to the Mo[double bond]S unit and undergoes further reactions with SO[sub 2]. 12 refs., 2 figs.
