Apparatus for automatically introducing coolant into and shutting down wells

Patent ·
OSTI ID:6046247
This invention relates to systems for automatically introducing a coolant into wells in order to maintain the temperature below a preselected level. In carrying out the invention, a temperature sensing means is disposed in the well in the vicinity of the producing stratum. This means produces a first condition (such as an electric signal) in response to a specified temperature in the well, and then a second condition (such as the absence of the electric signal) in response to a temperature less than the specified temperature. Flow-control means introduce a coolant into a suitable passage within the well (such as the annulus between the well casing and tubing) in response to the second condition. Additional flow control means are provided for the tubing string or other production passage for shutting in the well in the event the temperature sensing means fails to produce the second condition within a specified time period.
