Zirconia catalysts supported on alumina or silica have been prepared by means of the controlled hydrolysis of a zirconium alkoxide by the hydroxyl groups on the surface of the support, followed by calcination in air at 820 K. The samples were characterized by XRD, XPS, and IR of surface hydroxyl groups and of CO[sub 2] adsorption, and by isopropanol decomposition reaction. The dispersion of zirconia obtained by this technique is very high, but it is sensitive to some parameters, such as surface properties of the support, solvent of the alkoxide, and addition of acetyl acetone to the preparation mixture. The amorphous zirconia dispersed on alumina or silica displays surface properties different from those of the bulk zirconia.
