Kinetics of the reactions of atomic hydrogen and deuterium with ethane

The rate constants of the reactions of atomic deuterium with ethane that proceed via detachment of an H atom with the formation of HD and an ethyl radical and via displacement of an H atom with the formation of deuteroethane and a free hydrogen atom were determined at 343-439 K. The kinetic isotope effect of heterogeneous recombination of hydrogen and deuterium atoms on quartz was studied. The need to take into account displacement reactions in many complex processes is pointed out.
