Ignition timing sensor for diesel engine

Patent ·
OSTI ID:6044866

An ignition timing sensor system is designed for use in a diesel engine swirl chamber, comprising: a connecting jet connecting the swirl chamber to a main combustion chamber; a fuel injection nozzle having a fuel jet opening into the swirl chamber substantially tangentially to a wall of the swirl chamber; a glow plug mounted in the swirl chamber and including a heater positioned downstream from the fuel jet with respect to the direction of fuel flow injected from the fuel jet; and an ignition sensor mounted in the swirl chamber, the sensor including a first end extending into the swirl chamber and an optical conductor projecting through the first end into the swirl chamber. The first end is displaced from the direction of fuel flow and positioned downstream from the connecting jet with respect to the direction of air flow from the main combustion chamber, the air flow abutting against and washing the optical conductor.
