Hazardous waste treatment technologies: An inventory
- Foster Wheeler Environmental Services, Livingston, NJ (United States)
Project managers seeking appropriate technologies for hazardous waste site remediation face a wide array of treatment options. Project goals generally dictate choosing technologies that permanently destroy or immobilize toxic substances, resulting in reductions of their mobility, toxicity or volume. The principal treatment categories, in roughly ascending order of cost, are biological, physical, solidification or stabilization, chemical, and thermal. Additional options include containment and monitoring. The following inventory describes technologies in the five major categories. They are: biological treatment; physical treatment; stabilization and solidification; chemical treatment; and thermal destruction.
