Measurements of relative differential cross sections have been obtained for elastic scattering of {sup 3}He nuclei from {sup 208}Pb at energies well below the Coulomb barrier. The measurements show deviations from Rutherford scattering, which are attributed to electric polarization of the {sup 3}He nuclei in the Coulomb field of {sup 208}Pb. The deduced value of the electric polarizability for {sup 3}He is {alpha}=0.250{plus minus}0.040 fm{sup 3}. This result is significantly larger than expected from measurements of cross sections for {sup 3}He photodisintegration.
