Catalytic converter for exhaust gases

Patent ·
OSTI ID:6042893
This patent describes a catalytic converter comprising an annular catalyst bed containing catalyst beads and defined by coaxial inner and outer louvered tubed. An outer shell coaxial with the catalytic bed forms a gas flow path through the converter where the catalyst bed is interposed between an upstream flow portion and a downstream portion of the gas flow path with the upstream portion defined in part by the inner surface of the inner louvered tube. The downstream portion defines in part the outer surface of the outer louvered tube and the inner surface of the outer shell, and means forming an outlet in the downstream portion having a cross-sectional area that is no greater than the cross-sectional area of the upstream portion. The outlet means comprises a flange that defines the rear wall of the catalyst bed and projects radially beyond the outer louvered tube, toward the outer sheet, and into the downstream portion, constricting the flow path. The flange includes radial tabs that engage the inner surface of the shell further constricting and defining the flow path between the flange and the outer shell.
