High temperature ceramic metal attachment using a strain absorbing fiber metal pad

Low modulus fiber metal materials, designated BRUNSBOND Pad, have been developed for attaching ceramic coatings to metal substrates. The fiber metal pad acts as a strain absorbing compliant interlayer to take up the stress caused by the difference in expansivity between ceramic and metal substrate. Ceramic coatings, typically .062 to .125 in. thick, can be retained intact on a metal substrate through conditions of severe thermal shock. Applications include high temperature ceramic thermal barrier coatings for gas turbine engine seals and combustors, MHD electrodes and internal combustion engine insulators.
