Journal Article · · 7th World Petr. Congr., Mexico; (United States)
OSTI ID:6042387
This paper deals with the development of the hot-water process and related operations. Reference is made to recent large scale-field test work. The handling, measurement, storage, and conditioning of feed material are discussed together with the problem of unit operation extrapolation. The crucial operation of separation of bitumen froth from sands is discussed in detail. The effect of variations in tar sand types, the design and control of the separation circuit, bitumen scavenging, tailing disposal, and factors affecting recovery and grade of bitumen are considered. The dehydration and demineralization of crude froth are discussed. Bitumen upgrading is briefly discussed and compared with current practices in the oil industry.
