A clutch assembly is described comprising: a generally hollow cylindrical driven input member having a co-axial passageway; a radially inwardly extending clutch plates connected to the input member for rotation; a radially outwardly extending clutch plates interleaved with the first clutch plates; a rotatable hub connected to the second clutch plates for rotation. The hub includes an annular piston plate disposed thereabout which is axially immovable relative to the hub forming an output member to the clutch assembly; a hollow cylinder disposed about the hub and the piston plate and axially movable relative to the hub. The cylinder includes a radially inwardly extending cylinder plate disposed between the first and second clutch plates and the piston plate; means for normally urging the cylinder plate into engagement with the first and second clutch plates so as to cause frictional engagement to couple the input member to the hub; and means for selectively moving the cylinder plate out of engagement with the first and second clutch plates to uncouple the hub from the input member.
