The testimony provided NIOSH support to the MSHA proposal to regulate diesel powered equipment in underground coal mines. NIOSH has recently published a Current Intelligence Bulletin on diesel exhaust in which the carcinogenicity of diesel exhaust is considered. The testimony contains 50 citations which are relevant to the issue. These citations concern the carcinogenicity of diesel exhaust, environmental data, environmental standards, human health effects (respiratory effects, mobility effects, epidemiological studies, dust exposures, and mining diseases), medical surveillance, sampling and analytical methodology, and toxicology.
