Kinetic theory of two-plasmon decay

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:6040823
Tha main goal of this work has been to extend the theory of the two-plasmon decay instability to the high temperature regimes often accessed in current laser fusion experiments. We derived the coupled mode equations for the two-plasmon decay instability from the Vlasov-Maxwell equations. This formulation allowed us to calculate high temperature corrections to the Langmuir wave coupling strength as well as linear Landau damping. In addition, the non-resonant coupling of a Langmuir wave and a thermal electron having a velocity equal to the phase velocity of the difference mode is described by this formulation.
