Logistics in underground mining: a close examination

Journal Article · · Coal Min. Process.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6040763
The logistics activities associated with underground coal mining are considered in 6 cost categories: transport of men and materials; coal and rock transportation; electrical distribution and communications; water handling; hydraulics; ventilation. The average costs of these operations under typical US conditions are 10-15 dollars per ton. Breakdowns of the costs are shown for each category for various mine sizes working coal seams 4-6 ft thick by room-and-pillar and longwall methods. Other tables show the percentage of time given to the different activities by various categories of workers, and the associated labour costs. The study concludes that logistics activities in the mining industry need to be made more efficient.
