Line-voltage thermostats could be better

The use of line voltage space heating thermostats that maintain accurate temperature control may result in considerable energy savings over a heating season. Results of two analyses show that the use of poorly performing thermostats may cause heating-energy consumption as much as 10 to 20% higher than it might otherwise be if very good thermostats were used. Ontario Hydro undertook field tests and a survey of users to monitor energy use in 3 residential buildings where poor thermostats were replaced with good thermostats. Results are due in 1979. A study by Honeywell found that among the thermostat-performance characteristics that can be improved, a given percentage reduction in droop will give larger energy savings than an equivalent percentage increase in cycling rate.
