Complete absence of isotope effect in YBa/sub 2/Cu/sub 3/O/sub 7/: Consequences for phonon-mediated superconductivity

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev. B: Condens. Matter; (United States)
YBa/sub 2/Cu/sub 3/O/sub 7/ has been prepared with enriched /sup 135/Ba, /sup 138/Ba, /sup 63/Cu, and /sup 65/Cu isotopes. The superconducting transition temperature T/sub c/ is found to be insensitive to the mass of the Ba and Cu atoms. This result, when combined with earlier findings of no T/sub c/ shift for oxygen-isotope substitution or rare-earth substitution, demonstrates the complete absence of an isotope effect in YBa/sub 2/Cu/sub 3/O/sub 7/. The consequences of these results for the applicability of phonon-mediated electron pairing mechanisms are discussed.
