Can the proliferation of Nuclear Weapons into the Middle East be prevented. How might a NWFZ regime for the Middle East be created. To address these questions, this study offers a viable alternative towards the prevention of nuclear weapons proliferation into the Middle East by implementing United Nations resolutions (1974-1983) on the establishment of a NWFZ in the Middle East. It is a salient fact for students of this region that the Middle East is indeed one of the most sensitive regions, witnessing almost continuous military conflict and political upheaval. Indeed the Middle East is still exposed to the pressures exerted by strong political commitments, geographic proximity between block territories, the concentration of forces and superpower rivalry all of which create a setting conducive to a large scale military confrontation. This dissertation demonstrates that the explicit integration of nuclear weapons into the overall military capabilities and national security policies of the countries within this region could lead to devastating international effects. It offers the NWFZ approach as a viable solution as well as showing how it could be implemented and how to overcome diplomatic obstacles facing this proposal.
