Light ion beam focusing and stability of imploding foils are being studied using a series of pulsed power devices with a goal of ignition scaling experiments on PBFA-II in 1986. The critical issues are to demonstrate an order of magnitude increase in beam brightness with increasing accelerating voltage and ion mass, and to scale the implosions of cylindrical foils to the 100 TW drive level. Diagnostic techniques are being developed in order to allow us to investigate the fundamental issue of implosion hydrodynamics and ignition scaling.
