In determining the influence of sample position on the measured signal in compensated scanning calorimeters, Swedish researchers from the University of Lund found that the signal measured is equal to a thermal signal generated in the sample only under the conditions that 1) the investigated sample is inside the compensation feedback loop and 2) the gain of the amplifier is sufficiently high. The theoretical analysis revealed that when the sample is outside the feedback loop, the signal measured depends also on the time constant of the sample and the heating rate, even if the gain of the amplifier is very high.
