A brief description of a Nimbus sattelite is given. Also discussed are: principles of satellite remote sensing; instruments for downward (nadir) sounding of the stratosphere, including the satellite infrared spectrometer and a pressure modulated radiometer; infrared interferometer spectrometer; determination of O/sub 3/ distribution from backscattered uv radiation; occultation; ir limb scanning; and the outlook for the future.
