Radiation-induced copolymerization of methyl trifluoroacrylate with fluoroolefin

Journal Article · · J. Polym. Sci., Polym. Lett. Ed.; (United States)
This is a preliminary study on the radiation-induced copolymerization of methyl trifluoroacrylate (MTFA; CF/sub 2/ = CFCOOCH/sub 3/) with fluorooletin, mainly MTFA-tetrafluorethylene (TFE). The yield and composition of polymers obtained for the copolymerizations of MTFA with various fluoroolefins are summarized. MTFA copolymerizes with ethylene and propylene to form an alternating copolymer. The products from MTFA-fluorinated ethylene contain 12.0 to 51.2 mol % MTFA. The polymerization rate decreases with increasing fluorine contents in fluoroolefins, except TFE. The copolymers such as MTFA-VF and MTFA-TrFE have nearly equimolar composition. Copolymerization of MTFA with hexafluoropropylene does not take places. 3 figures, 1 table. (DP)
