Diffraction of He and Ne from Ni(113): A comparative study
A pronounced asymmetric out-of-plane diffraction rainbow observed with scattering of a room-temperature Ne beam (/ital E//sub /ital i//=63.5 meV) from Ni(113) points to a charge-density redistribution on this surface by which the fourfold hollows on the (100) microfacets are smoothed and the threefold hollows on the (111) microfacets become more pronounced. Whereas upon diffraction of a room-temperature He beam the asymmetry in the diffraction pattern is hardly observable, it becomes more and more pronounced with increasing He energy. Although a few characteristic differences show up in the corrugation contours corresponding to the highest-energy He-diffraction results (/ital E//sub /ital i//=180.5 meV) and the room-temperature Ne-diffraction data, the He results in general support the conclusions drawn on the basis of the Ne-diffraction analyses. Possible origins of the remaining discrepancies are discussed.
