Penetration of air-borne particulates through the human nose

Journal Article · · J. Ind. Hyg. Toxicol.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6035566
Corn oil, sodium bicarbonate, and tricalcium phosphate were drawn through the noses of 6 volunteers at flow rates of 10, 17, 29, or 60 liters/min. Particles were compared by mass and not by aerodynamic diameter. Increases in flow rate decreased total cloud penetration; for corn oil, the particle diameters corresponding to 50% penetration were 8, 5, 5, and 2 ..mu..m, respectively, for each flow rate. Larger particles showed less penetration.
