The reactions of O/sub 2//sup -/ and H/sub 2/O/sub 2/ with colloidal MnO/sub 2/ in alkaline solution were studied by using pulse radiolysis and stop flow techniques. In both reactions, Mn/sup 4 +/ ions in MnO/sub 2/ are reduced to a certain degree. The reduction processes are autocatalytic, and the rate can be increased by the addition of manganous ions. These effects are explained in terms of the reduction mechanism proposed in part 1. The autocatalysis involves (1) reduction of Mn/sup 3 +/ centers at the surface of the colloidal particles by the substrate and (2) comproportionation of Mn/sup 2 +/ and Mn/sup 4 +/ centers. When Mn/sup 3 +/ centers have been accumulated to a certain degree, the conproportionation reaction is slowed down. O/sub 2//sup -/ then catalytically dismutes, and H/sub 2/O/sub 2/ is catalytically decomposed. 19 references, 10 figures.
