This book includes chapters on the emerging area of biotechnology applied to fossil fuels. Although many people believe the energy crisis is over, there is still a strong worldwide interest in coal research. A new feature of this research on coal is the rapidly emerging interest in applications of modern biotechnology. For example, this book includes a chapter on pioneering work in genetically producing sulfatase enzymes for removal of organic sulfur from coal (to prevent acid rain). Other research work is included which builds on recent discoveries that certain lignases (actually, peroxidase enzymes) cleave the lignin-type lattices in coal producing a type of liquid fuel. This book focuses on current research work in biotechnology applied to fossil fuels. The promise for commercialization appears to be quite strong.
