Excitation of high-spin particle-hole states in /sup 28/Si by pion inelastic scattering

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev. Lett.; (United States)

The inelastic scattering of 162-MeV ..pi../sup +/ and ..pi../sup -/ by /sup 28/Si was studied at larger momentum transfer. Several high-spin particle-hole states are observed to be preferentially excited in this reaction. These include the 9.70-MeV (5/sup -/,T=0), 11.58-MeV (6/sup -/,T=0) and 14.36-MeV (6/sup -/,T=1) states. The ratios of the cross sections of the 6/sup -/, T=0 state to the 6/sup -/, T=1 state are 1.5/sup +0.4//sub -0.2/ for ..pi../sup +/ and 1.7 +- 0.4 for ..pi../sup -/, in contrast to ratios of about 4 predicted by simple distorted-wave impulse-approximation calculations.
