Nature of the nebula near. gamma. Cygni

Journal Article · · Sov. Astron. AJ (Engl. Transl.); (United States)
OSTI ID:6034195
The optical nebula near ..gamma.. Cyg is considered to result from the collision of radiatively cooling gas swept up by an expanding supernova remnant with a dense interstellar cloud. The collision would generate in the oncoming gas a bow shock whose hard radiation would ionize and heat the cloud. This process is analogous to the excitation of an H II zone, with the stationary shock front playing the role of the hot star. The model can reconcile the strong H..cap alpha.. emission of the nebula with the low gas velocities observed.
