This patent describes a process for the inspection of a welded shut hatch cover plate at the peripheral ledge forming the boundary between the plenum below the flooded core of a boiling water nuclear reactor and the upwardly exposed and flooded shroud annulus for recirculating the water for reactor forced circulation. The inspection process occurring in a boiling water nuclear reactor during an outage when the reactor steam dome, steam dryer, and steam separator are removed for direct access to the interior of the flooded reactor.
