't Hooft--Polyakov monopole near the Prasad--Sommerfield limit

Journal Article · · Ann. Phys. (N.Y.); (United States)
A perturbative classical monopole solution for the SO(3) gauge theory is constructed in the limit of small but non-vanishing Higgs potential. This corresponds to the limit ..mu../sup 2//2M/sup 2//sub W/ = lambda<<1, where ..mu.. equals the mass of the scalar particle and M/sub W/ equals the mass of the intermediate vector particles. The monopole solution and mass are found to involve non-analytic functions of lambda: (lambda)/sup 1/2/ and lambda ln lambda. The monopole mass M/sub m/ is calculated to order ..mu../sup 2//M/sub W/ as M/sub m/ = (4..pi../e/sup 2/)M/sub W/(1+(1/2)(..mu../M/sub W/) +(1/2)(..mu../sup 2//M/sup 2//sub W/)ln(..mu../M/sub W/)+0.7071(..mu../sup 2//M/sup 2//sub W/)).
