Energy imperatives for the 1990s
The 1990s are expected to bring fundamental changes in the global interactions of energy supply and consumption, environmental concerns, and economic growth. Finding a strategy to deal with these issues is a major challenge to the industrialized world and critical to the well-being of the developing countries. Pragmatic and perhaps drastic policies will be required of governments and international organizations. For these reasons the Atlantic Council of the United States established a senior Energy Working Group of American and international experts to make action recommendations for national and international policy makers, especially in our own country. The goal is to provide the energy required everywhere for economic survival and growth, with due concern for environmental health and safety considerations. The areas of the principal specific recommendations are as follows: environment-general, air pollution, global climate change, energy efficiency, liquid hydrocarbons, electricity supply, and nuclear power.
