The Institute of Nuclear Power Operations (INPO) and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) have recently shown increased interest and activity in plant-chemistry programs and issues. The level of interest and concern for plant chemistry was precipitated by several major chemistry-related corrosion problems appearing in nuclear steam plants, especially PWR steam generators and boiling-water-reactor (BWR) piping. This article addresses only PWR steam-plant corrosion problems, which include stress-corrosion cracking (SCC), wastage, denting, pitting, and intergranular attack (IGA) in steam generators.
