The combination of two or more types of polymeric materials is a commonly used technique to improve the overall properties of a base polymer matrix. The dispersion of a rubbery phase in a brittle matrix is often used to increase the impact strength of brittle thermoplastics such as polystyrene or poly(methyl methacrylate)via rubber-toughening. The rubbery phase acts as a stress concentration region which results in energy absorbing processes such as crazing or shear yielding which ultimately increases the energy required for the deformation of the brittle thermoplastic matrix.
