Natural gas in the West: scarcity to surplus to

In 1968, for the first time, reserves added during the year were less than production. From 1968 to 1977, the US produced twice as much gas as was found in the lower forty-eight states. The natural gas industry faced an interstate shortage. Drilling increased, demand for gas was reduced, and gas began to flow from the saturated intrastate market to the supply-deficient interstate market. Drilling has increased each year since 1978, and reached a new high in 1981. In 1981 there was sufficient gas available to satisfy virtually all US markets. Now in 1982 the industry is faced with residual fuel oil competition. The problems associated with sharply increasing gas prices, anticipated in 1985, have arrived. The contracts with pipelines for deregulated gas are also producing problems. (DP)
