A coupled system of equations describing the propagation of longitudinal and transverse waves of finite amplitude in a plasma is studied. The two types of waves are coupled by the mechanisms by which the high-frequency longitudinal and transverse waves affect the particle density in the propagation region. The condition that the system of equations be hyperbolic is derived on the basis of nonlinear geometric optics. Dispersive effects are taken into account in the problem of the suppression of the modulational instability in this system. The existence of soliton solutions are discussed.
