The propagation of surface and volume polaritons in a metal-semiconductor-insulator structure is studied. It is shown that when the semiconductor film thickness is less than some critical value a section with negative dispersion appears on the dispersion curves of the surface polaritons. The dependence of the critical thickness of the semiconductor film on the dielectric constant is studied. It is found that taking into account losses in the semiconductor leads to the appearance of two branches of surface waves, one of which is characterized by the decay of the wave in the direction of its propagation (forward wave) and the other by decay in the opposite direction (backward wave).
