This patent describes an improvement in a generally rectangular molten carbonate fuel cell stack. It comprises: a molten carbonate fuel cell units, each the fuel cell unit comprising an anode and a cathode, an alkali metal carbonates electrolyte in contact with one side of the anode and an alkali metal carbonates electrolyte in contact with an opposite facing side of the cathode, and a separator plate separating the cell unit between the anode and cathode forming an anode chamber between one side of the separator plate and the anode and a cathode chamber between the opposite side of the separator plate and the cathode.
