The primary purpose of the Kawerau steamfield is to supply steam to the Tasman Pulp and Paper Mill, which it has been doing for 40 years. Geothermal provides 30% of the mill`s process steam. Mill demand fluctuates so the steamfield has been designed to be load following. Steam is also supplied for timber drying in kilns and for greenhouse heating. Some of the separated geothermal water is used to generate electricity in two {open_quotes}binary cycle{close_quotes} electricity generating plants. Operation is carried out by two staff with one operator always on call through an automatic paging system. The two staff also programme and supervise the maintenance. An effective well antiscalant system has been developed. Reinjection has been under investigation for about 12 years, including reservoir studies and field trials followed by 7 years of shallow reinjection.
