At coke plants equipped with vertical-tube coolers where there is a deficiency of low-temperature cooling agent, the best method of increasing the efficiency of primary cooling of the coke-oven gas is reduction of the gas temperature ahead of the VTC's by 5 to 7/sup 0/C. This may be achieved by dispersion of ammonia liquor, cooled in sheathed-tube heat exchangers or air coolers, in the gas system.
