Analysis of scaling the Semiscale Mod-3 system to a pressurized water reactor

Technical Report ·
DOI:https://doi.org/10.2172/6025697· OSTI ID:6025697
Scaling concepts and approaches used in designing the Semiscale MOD-3 system to provide scaled simulation of the thermal and hydraulic performance of a pressurized water reactor (PWR) equipped with upper head injection (UHI) are discussed. Calculations and experimental data were used to identify the potential influence of scaling compromises on Semiscale MOD-3 system behavior for each system component. The overall capability of the Semiscale MOD-3 system for use in assessing the UHI process is not expected to be altered by these compromises; thus providing a data base for the development of codes that can be used to calculate UHI behavior. The results obtained indicate that, while Semiscale MOD-3 will not entirely duplicate the thermal hydraulic behavior of a PWR with UHI, the results should be sufficiently representative to provide information on important phenomena expected to occur in a PWR.
