Fuel injection pump for an internal combustion engine

Patent ·
OSTI ID:6023974
This patent describes a fuel injection pump for an internal combustion engine provided with a fuel injection valve. This pump consists of a number of interrelated component parts. The first component described is a rotary distributor rotating in synchronism with engine revolution and closely associated with the second member - the cam ring which encircles it. This ring is characterized as being fabricated with an inner surface with two or more cam protrusions. In addition, the patent indicates that the device has two or more plungers mounted on the rotary distributor for synchronous rotation with respect to the rotary distributor. The plunger defines a common pumping chamber and engages the inner surface of the cam ring for radially directed reciprocation with respect to the rotary distributor and thus enabling the pumping of fuel from the pumping chamber to the injection valve. A crucial control mechanism is also described which pertains to the fact that at least one of the cam protrusions has a cam lift profile different from that of the other cam protrusions so that the sum of the cam lift profiles of the cam protrusions determining fuel injection rate differs in shape from each of the cam lift characteristics. The difference in cam profile includes a slight uneven angular offset with a different radial dimension of one of the cam protrusions. This offset protrusion engages one of the plungers before the other cam protrusions engage the other plungers.
