The language of surface probabilities of ..cap alpha..-particle formation is used to analyze the experimental data on the ..cap alpha.. decay of the neutron-deficient isotopes of Bi. The analysis shows that there is a favored ..cap alpha.. transition from the ground state of the Bi isotopes to the excited state with J/sup (/=9/2/sup -/ of the isotopes of Tl. An interpretation of the ..cap alpha.. decay of the isomeric states of Bi is proposed. Estimates are given of the values of T /sup chemically bond//sub 1/2/ and of the fractions of ..cap alpha.. decay for ..cap alpha.. transitions between the ground states of the odd isotopes of Bi and Tl.
