Roadheaders cut sharp profiles

This article discusses the versatility of roadheading machines that enable them to drive entries and tunnels with large cross sections through hard and soft rock. Mine developing entries through rock sometimes use roadheaders instead of continuous miners to excavate. The principle of the two types of equipment is similar, but the roadheader, also called a tunneling machine or a boom-type miner, can cut any size or shape of entry cross section. Roadheaders can be equipped with a hardrock or a soft rock boom depending upon mining conditions. Extensive surface trials have demonstrated that roadheaders can operate more continuously, cutting a more accurate profile.
