The retired chairman of the Tennessee Valley Authority feels the seriousness of the energy crisis is intensified by a lack of communication and understanding between scientists and the public, which includes politicians. US world leadership is built on energy development, and internally, intensive near-term conservation coupled with additional sources of energy will be required to maintain a high standard of living for a growing population. A review of domestic energy sources illustrates the need for breeder reactor development, but political leaders have responded to pressures from the anti-nuclear lobby. The risks of nuclear power are examined in relation to those of other energy sources and to the safety record to date. Mr. Wagner concludes that the alternatives associated with a loss of US leadership would be a worse fate than the risk of a nuclear accident.
