Method and apparatus for setting, unsetting, and retrieving a packer or bridge plug from a subterranean well

Patent ·
OSTI ID:6021437
A method is described for setting, unsetting, and retrieving an inflatable packing tool utilizing a downhole packer actuator assembly, a remedial tubing string and a wireline in a subterranean well including a large diameter bore and a relatively small diameter tubing string, the packer actuator assembly comprising longitudinally separable first and second portions, comprising: structurally connecting the first and second portions of the packer assembly by a fluid pressure responsive release mechanism; suspending a hollow centralizing housing having an upwardly open cavity with an open circulation valve therein from the inflatable packing tool with the cavity communicating with the bore of the small diameter tubing string; lowering the inflatable packing tool and centralizer housing; closing the circulation valve in the centralizer housing; supplying pressurized fluid at a first level through the remedial tubing string and to the inflatable packing tool to inflate and set the inflatable packing tool within the large diameter well bore; unsetting the inflatable packer; and passing pressurized fluid at a second higher level through the remedial tubing string and to the packer actuator assembly for releasing the first portion of the packer actuator assembly from the second portion of the packer actuator assembly.
