Evidence suggests that active solar systems require more maintenance than the average homeowner wants to provide but that owner satisfaction with passive solar technology increases with time. Surveys show that the majority of passive solar systems consist of direct-gain walls, south-facing windows and sunspaces, sunlit floors and walls, natural ventilation and shading. Innovative solar financing schemes are needed to encourage builders to add solar homes to their lines. (JMT)
