Review of petroleum geology of Anadyr and Khatyrka basins

USSR hydrocarbon exploration in two sedimentary basins in Siberia should provide data of value to US explorationists because of the proximity of these basins - the Anadyr and Khatyrka - to large unexplored basins in US waters on the Bering Shelf. Soviet publications indicate that geologically, the Anadyr basin (which has produced noncommercial quantities of oil and gas) lies between a late Mesozoic belt of volcanic and plutonic rocks similar to the Sierra Nevada of California and a complex foldbelt on the south that structurally resembles the Franciscan terrain of the California coast ranges. Less extensive exploration in the Khatyrka basin has also discovered only small amounts of hydrocarbons; this basin contains Tertiary sediment deposited within a structurally complex Mesozoic foldbelt that parallels the edge of the continental shelf.
