Thermo-anthracite is one of the basic materials used for the production of carbon electrodes, anodes, carbon linings, and constructional components for the electrometallurgical, chemical, electrode, and semiconductor industries, to name only the major outlets. Since thermo-anthracite production is a thermochemical process, the anthracites on which it is based must possess certain qualities that fit them for thermal processing, including ability to retain a sufficiently coarse grain size while undergoing the necessary reduction in electrical resistivity, ability to consolidate without increasing in volume or to retain the original volume, and freedom from foreign inclusions which set up additional thermal stresses and act as failure centers. In addition, the mechanical strength of the anthracites must be sufficient to preserve them from comminution during handling and transportation. These requirements are met by selecting anthracites with the necessary properties either in the natural state or after cleaning by suitable methods. The strength properties of anthracites depend on their rank, petrographic constitution, and lump size. The specification of anthracites for conversion to thermo-anthracite is discussed, showing that the 70-25 mm size fraction can be used instead of the 120-70 mm. The anthracites mined by the Sverdlovsk Anthracite Association are suitable raw materials, and the 70-25 mm size fraction can be converted in shaft-type ovens.
