The characteristics and properties of supervova 1987A, discovered on February 24, 1987 at the Las Campanas Observatory in Chile, are described. The origin of the supernova is studied; the neutrinos detected prove that the explosion was caused by the collapse of a massive stellar core, which is consistent with SN 1987A being of Type II. The brightness and color variations, and the changes and P Cygni shapes observed in the spectra for the supernova are analyzed.
